For many, school can play an invaluable part in helping them adjust to their new environment. But while mainstreaming new arrivals may be the best way of integrating them in school life, is this enough to meet their needs?
NCB recently consulted over 60 young asylum seekers and refugees to gain their views on appropriate education for new arrivals. While students were grateful for the extra help they had received from their schools, many felt they would have made faster progress if they had had intensive language tuition in the first two or three months.
Some would have preferred to acquire at least the basics in English before attending any classes. They felt great frustration at the beginning of their school lives because the language barrier was such an impediment to their progress socially and academically.
