NCB Now: Understanding the needs of migrant children

1 min read
Until very recently there were few children in Northern Ireland who were asylum seekers, refugees or from migrant families.

However, with the end of conflict and better economic prospects, Northern Ireland now has a more diverse child population than it ever had before.

This change has been rapid, leaving policy makers and service providers both unprepared and unaware of the needs of these children who have newly arrived in the country.

NCB NI, with funding from the Gulbenkian Foundation, will be undertaking a study to identify the key issues in understanding and meeting the needs of these children. Already, a seminar has been held for professionals who have direct experience of working with children and young people in these groups.

The research will involve working directly with these groups and will explore and record their experiences of living in Northern Ireland and adapting to a new country.
