Time for some political education with the quick guide.
1. Find out how much young people know about the original St George.
He wasn't English. He was probably an early Christian martyr from somewhere around modern-day Turkey, executed in Palestine in the third century.
He didn't become the patron saint of England until 1425. Various legends evolved about him, such as rescuing a king's daughter and slaying a dragon. St George was popularised in England by Crusaders fighting religious wars in the Middle East.
2. Encourage young people to devise a quiz about nationalism in the UK.
Use it to interview each other. Ask factual questions. Who knows the date of St George's Day or the other national days of countries of the UK?
