1. Cheque guarantee cards help you pay by cheque in a shop. Cash cards let you take money from a magic money machine. Debit cards deduct money immediately from your bank account. But none of these charming bits of plastic will let you enjoy goods or services now and defer payment for weeks, months or years. Only credit cards - such as those offered by MasterCard or Visa - can do this. They are not available to anyone under 18.
2. No-one is immune from targeting. Youth homelessness charity Centrepoint found that almost one in four young homeless people surveyed had been offered credit via promotional literature from credit card companies and other lenders sent to hostels. Centrepoint found that poor financial literacy and the amount of credit they are tempted with were among the reasons many young people were in debt.
