But now the choice has disappeared anyway. The payment of benefits by order book and giro is being phased out. Over the next two years, the Government will be encouraging everyone to open a bank account, a building society account, or the specially designed "Post Office card account".

1: Help young people choose a bank. Carefully. Walk round and pick up the literature from the likely contenders. Talk about interest rates, the branch site and its ATMs, and internet and telephone banking.
2: Young people, and definitely the under-18s, may not be offered the full gamut of banking services. They may go for a so-called basic account rather than a full-blown current account. But they need to know about them all. So explain bank statements, overdraft and interest charges and the various cards. What are the differences between an ATM card, a cheque guarantee card, a debit card, and a credit card?
