1. To be an active citizen in the UK you have to go shopping. Buying stuff is as essential to our culture as fighting wars was to the ancient Romans. Our modern cathedrals are shopping malls. Our best friends are plastic cards. If young people are to survive, they need a high degree of consumerist savvy and financial literacy. A lottery win would help too.

2. Encourage young people to explore the forces that persuade them to spend. Are they driven by peer pressure, celebrity endorsements, heavily promoted brands, or bargains? Identify the strategies retailers use to part us from our money and ask whether the goods ever live up to the promises.
