1. Introduce young people to the principles of area cost adjustments and formula spending shares. That's a joke. Its a reminder that certain aspects of local government can be dull, dull, dull. Even adults react badly to the thought of trying to understand town hall finances or follow interminable meetings. Young people - who like fast action and can't see the appeal of formal meetings - will need to find new ways to maintain their interest. Cheer yourself up by remembering that the poll tax riots weren't dull.
2. Recognising that a general election was likely this year, the Local Government Association decided to capitalise by making the whole year Local Democracy Year. The aim is to engage with the harder to reach young person and those disenchanted with the democratic system. That's a tough challenge, but the way is paved by strong and well-tested ideas.
