THE NATIONAL YOUTH AGENCY: Local Democracy Week

To support the week, developed as a Local Government Association initiative, The National Youth Agency has put together an activity pack for young people and local authority elected members to help them explore issues of local democracy together.

The pack, which is available as a Pdf file on The NYA web site at www.nya.org.uk and the local democracy site at www.

localdemocracyweek.info, suggests a range of activities building from the fact that local government may hardly feature on young people's radar screens.

It suggests some friendly "getting to know you" exercises and quizzes between young people and councillors, a look at the good things and the bad things connected with council meetings, ideas for improving services and facilities that impact on young people's lives and whether local authorities have any influence over these, a look at the limits of local authority power and ways in which councils have experimented with new ways of promoting democracy. For example, the London Borough of Camden did a webcast of council meetings and also set up an executive question time event.
