RESOURCES: Quick guide to... Local democracy

2 mins read

1 Be fair to councillors. Adults are often rude and dismissive about the efforts and motivations of elected representatives. Much of this is based on ignorance. And it rubs off on young people. So ask young people how much they think councillors get paid. If young people still think councillors are in it for the money, ask them to say how.

2 At the same time, explore how little some councillors know about the lives of young people. One idea for an activity is to design a quiz based on local knowledge. What are the favourite hang-outs for young people?

How much does it cost to get into the local cinema, swimming pool or leisure centre? What are the current rates for income support or jobseeker's allowance?
