1. Encourage young people to be clear about what they are trying to do.
Campaigns need an aim that is well understood and achievable. Aims of "improving the local environment" or "increasing young people's opportunity for a voice" might be desirable but are too vague. If you are not specific about where you want to be, you'll never know if you've got there.
2. The group's overall aim can be ambitious and long term - votes for 16-year-olds, or permission to convert waste ground to a youth facility. Those are fine, provided young people have a realistic grasp of what is involved and the time it will take. With such long-term aims, it is essential to have medium-term objectives as well. Take note of young people's personal achievements, then you can remind them when spirits droop and the struggle seems too much.
