1. Know the basics. The digestive system starts with the mouth, which is the recommended place for food and drink to enter the body. It is there that teeth and saliva begin the digestive process. Food travels down the oesophagus, or gullet, into the stomach, where it is stored and digested.

On then to the bowels, where nutrients are extracted and the waste processed for elimination. The gastrointestinal tract can be up to nine metres long.

2. The week beginning 18 July has been designated Gut Week. Set up by Core, the digestive disorders foundation, the Irritable Bowel Syndrome Network and yoghurt maker Yakult, its mission is to tell everyone to look after their digestive systems and eat a healthy diet. Gut Week's most important message is not to ignore any symptoms you may have.
