What it is: The Safe and Well programme was one of several launched in Northern Ireland by the Big Lottery Fund in 2006.

The fund has 18m available until it closes in 2009, and its mainpurpose is to improve the lives of those living in disadvantaged areasthrough preventative projects.

How much is on offer: Money will be given in two stages. At stage one,grants of between 20,000 and 50,000 are available todevelop stage-two applications.

At stage two, grants of between 600,000 and 1m will be onoffer. However, there are restrictions on applications for capitalcosts.

What it will fund: The grants are given over a five-year period and mustachieve two outcomes: community ownership of better and safer localenvironments; and improved mental and physical health for allpeople.

Projects must also address disadvantage, promote tolerance and socialinclusion, and contribute to the reduction of poverty.
