Resources: Funding Focus - You Can Do It

1 min read

What does it fund? DIY projects that "make a real difference to local people". Typically, this might involve sprucing up a youth and community centre or sports or after-school club. Last year, the Felicia Park Community Urban Farm in Gosport received 5,000 of B&Q materials to create a sensory garden, while Newlands Park Sports and Social Venue in Cheltenham was able to refurbish its community meeting room and changing rooms.

Who does it support? Community-based organisations from the UK and Republic of Ireland such as youth, disability and environmental groups. Schools can apply but not private individuals.

How much is available? Awards are generally 5,000 (or EUR7,500). In 2005, the scheme awarded a total of 100,000 to 21 community projects across the country. Nineteen projects received 5,000 worth of goods and two received 2,500. Since the launch in 1995, goods worth more than 1m have been awarded. Note that B&Q also runs a Better Neighbour grant scheme for smaller projects, offering grants of up to 500. Individual stores also run a waste donation programme whereby goods such as slightly damaged tins of paint, odd rolls of paper or end-of-range materials can be claimed by community groups and charities.
