Resources: Funding focus - Here to help

1 min read
What's it all about? An award scheme developed by British Gas in association with Save the Children that will fund young people's ideas for making their communities a better place to live. The second round of this scheme has a deadline of Friday 12 May so if you've got a good idea then you'd better act quickly.

What will it fund? The aim is to support young people to develop local projects and speak out on the issues that matter to them. Proposals can be for virtually anything but should fall within one of the following areas: improving health support and advice for children and young people, including sexual and mental health and drug and alcohol abuse; improving play and leisure opportunities, especially those that develop skills and give young people a voice in their community; and improving safety through provision of safe places to meet or by tackling bullying, racism and isolation.

The key terms that describe successful projects will be "youthful, original, dynamic and lasting" - so not just a set of football kits or paint to spruce up the youth club.

Who will it fund? Young people and those that work with them from anywhere in England, Wales and Scotland. Projects must support young people under 18 and young people must have been involved in putting together the project and application. Statutory groups can apply but only for work that hasn't already been funded and that can take place for 1,000 or less.

How much is available? This application round will support 50 projects with grants of up to 1,000. There should be another 200 similar-sized grants available in subsequent rounds.

Application procedure: Forms and guidance are available on the web site www.helpyourselves.org.uk. Applicants are encouraged to include the views of young people. The deadline for applications is 12 May 2006.
