What will it fund? There are four key themes, all derived from the Improving Opportunity, Strengthening Society strategy. Hence, the focus is on projects that: improve access and outcomes for black and minority ethnic (BME) communities in education, employment, health, housing and the criminal justice system; increase BME communities' confidence in public services; tackle racism and extremism; and bring together communities from different races and faiths. Money can go on staff, training or other running costs, and on capital spending that directly contributes to project activities and that amounts to no more than 50 per cent of the total grant. Among last year's recipients were Hackney Association Youth Club, which provided mentoring and employment preparation to 25 unemployed young people, and the Yorkshire-based Inner City Youth Partnership, which made a video promoting cultural diversity.
