Singing and music education in English primary schools have been given a10m boost from the Government. Measures include a programme toengage parents and young children in music.

English councils have been warned not to use the youth opportunity andcapital funds to replace existing services. Children's minister BeverleyHughes said she was keeping an eye on several councils.

Brent Council has secured an extra 2m from the Government tospend on the expansion of Preston Manor School. The Government will nowgive 2.5m towards the plans.
