NORTHERN IRELAND: Projects share 7.8m grants in European push for peace

1 min read
Youth workers in 60 voluntary projects across Northern Ireland are to be the beneficiaries of funding from the EU's Programme for Peace & Reconciliation, known as Peace II.

The sum of £7.8m is the second phase of funding from the programme; around £6m was allocated to youth projects in Northern Ireland last September, under the name Peace I. Grants will be spent over three years.

Money was granted through the Youth Education & Social Inclusion Partnership, a consortium within the Northern Ireland Education Service. Grants have gone to projects that demonstrated they are working towards reconciliation and employability.

Most grants were of £100,000, although eight grants of £300,000 were made. Recipients of £100,000 included Shankill Women's Centre in Belfast for its young women's project and the Love for Life scheme in Lurgan, which empowers 13 and 14-year-olds to make informed decisions.
