How did you get into this? I started as a play worker in 1979 and I've stayed in youth and play work ever since. My current role, which I've been in for about five years, was one I suggested myself. We had a real need to have quality communications with young people. When we do publicity for the youth service our competitors are products that target young people, such as McDonald's, Nike and iPods, so we have to make our publicity compete effectively with them.
What do you get out of this? I get a tremendous personal sense of achievement when something is presented and well-received. Some years ago, for example, we ran a series of publicity posters to promote a new skatepark. Young people were asking for them to put on their bedroom walls.
