Resources: And this is what I do - Mike Burtoft, outdoor educationco-ordinator, Bradford Council

1 min read

What do outdoor activities teach young people? We use activities including rock climbing, canoeing and walking as a tool to educate young people about themselves and develop their self-worth and an understanding of their skills in things such as teamwork and overcoming difficulties. I then relate it back to the challenges in their lives. Leaving school, for example, is scary and going out to get your first job is as scary as climbing your first rock face.

What do you get out of your role? I can watch young people grow in their ability to face challenges and watch them grow in confidence and overcome obstacles through a belief in themselves.
