Goals: To help young men address problems damaging their work or education prospects
Funding: 4,500 from Hillside Housing Trust
The regeneration of the Stonebridge Estate in northwest London is a massive project, involving the replacement of 1,775 homes and the rehousing of more than 6,000 people.
As part of this, Hillside Housing Trust, which manages the regeneration programme for the Stonebridge Housing Action Trust, set up the Voicing Our Issues and Struggles project. The eight-week scheme took about 15 young men aged 14 to 17 from the estate, and allowed them to speak out about their problems through mentors.
Dawn Manning, youth services project officer at Hillside Housing Trust, says: "We were trying to address the lack of young men taking up careers or higher education. The first part allows the young men to share issues that they have, while the second part is about identifying their academic strengths and weaknesses, and looking at careers that might appeal to them."
