NEWCASTLE YOUTH COUNCIL

Aim To give young people a bigger say in local issues

Funding £100,000 over two years from Newcastle City Council

Young people in Newcastle are set to get a stronger voice following the launch of an independent youth council.

Newcastle City Council has teamed up with local charity Children North East to establish the new forum.

Youth council co-ordinator Gerry Hunwick says: "It is the first time, to our knowledge, that a local authority has put its youth council into the hands of another organisation to make it completely independent."

The steering group of the project, which was launched last month, will include young people and representatives from the city council.
