Prognosis for teen health services

3 mins read Health
Sixteen months after a pioneering scheme to improve teenage health services came to an end, Neil Puffett reports on its likely impact.

Announced in the Youth Matters green paper in 2005, Teenage Health Demonstration Sites (THDSs) were intended to provide a benchmark for health services for young people.

By introducing one-stop health services for teenagers in innovative settings such as youth clubs or sports centres, it was hoped that health provision could be made more youth-friendly.

The sites chosen - Bolton, Hackney, Northumberland and Portsmouth - adapted to offer teenagers access to specially trained health advisers providing information on topics such as pregnancy and obesity. They also sought to increase youth participation by involving young people in the development of services.

According to an evaluation report published last June, to a large degree the sites have succeeded in their aim. But since then there has been no additional funding announced to extend the programme.
