The programme - funded for two years and supported by the Department of Health - set up the THDSs at Bolton, Hackney, Northumberland and Portsmouth to look at ways to improve existing provision of health information, advice and guidance to young people in typical health services and in alternative places, such as youth clubs and sports coaching. The report confirms that each site succeeded in improving the health services available to and used by young people.
Policy makers, service providers and commissioners have known for some time that young people can find it hard to ask for help and advice, may worry about confidentiality and how welcome they will be and whether they will receive the time, respect, care and attention they seek.
