
The young mums I work with appreciate that I can go to them and they haven't got to travel on a bus with a pram for appointments," says Stephanie Crane, an outreach nurse at City and Hackney Young People's Services Plus in Hackney. "I carry out initial consultations at home and when the method of contraception has been decided we can arrange for them to receive it. We have fitted implants and given the injection at home."
The service has been designed around young people's needs, with health workers seeing them in a comfortable setting. Meeting in a cafe or outside the local wet fish shop may not seem the ideal setting to deliver health advice, but for Hackney it works. "It's about going that extra mile," says Adrian Kelly, the London borough's teenage pregnancy co-ordinator.
