In the second of a series of regional reports ahead of the comprehensive spending review, Neil Puffett reports on the impact that government cuts would have in Norfolk.

The sheer size of the county makes the stark differences in wealth all the more challenging for professionals working with children. As well as dealing with the urban hubs of Norwich, Kings Lynn and Great Yarmouth, pockets of rural deprivation with poor transport links make ensuring adequate service provision all the more difficult.

In-year cuts have already affected children's services but further pain is likely as a result of the comprehensive spending review (CSR) on 20 October, especially considering the majority (57 per cent) of the authority's budget is spent on the department - a hefty £908m out of a total revenue budget of £1.6bn.
