3i revealed that its top 50 companies had fallen in value by 21 per cent to £3.6bn as of 31 December 2008.
The firm has an investment in the Continuum Group, which has more than 70 residential homes across the country, nine specialist schools and a family support service.
Although 3i said it could not comment on individual cases, a spokeswoman said: "3i remains supportive of all its portfolio companies. As we said in our interim management statement last week, we have £834m of available cash and undrawn facilities with which we can continue to support our portfolio, and the management and performance of our portfolio remains our highest priority."
