More than 20 primary schools in Rotherham are taking part in pilots run by the Student Journalist Project, which has already been working with secondary school children in the borough.
The project's Cub Reporters initiative will see primary pupils producing podcasts, websites and articles for a local newspaper. Barrie Morgan, the project's co-ordinator, said: "Having seen how popular the project is with secondary school students, we wanted to extend the opportunity to primary-aged pupils."
Morgan said the work should increase children's literacy and communication skills and would help them move into secondary school. "We want primary school reporters to work with our journalist teams in secondary schools, so when they moveto their comprehensive they know someone there already," he said.
