Education News: Primary pupils - Hertfordshire pilots philosophylessons

Primary school pupils in Hertfordshire are taking part in philosophy lessons in a pilot scheme to develop their thinking and reasoning skills.

Six- and 11-year-olds at The Leys Primary School in Stevenage startphilosophy lessons with a story that poses questions. Head teacherCheryl Salmon said the sessions were proving so successful they would beextended throughout the school.

"We've found philosophy stimulates children's thinking skills, theircapacity to reason and the way they use language. They love it," shesaid.

The lessons have also been filmed to help train other staff wanting toteach the subject.

Conservative councillor David Lloyd, Hertfordshire County Council'sexecutive member for education, said: "By discussing their ideaschildren learn to respect and understand other points of view, as wellas gaining confidence in communicating their own thoughts."
