Horspath Church of England Primary's class councils have generated lists of the qualities they are looking for in the successful candidate, and the school council will put together a job specification for applicant information packs.
Children have also suggested how they could be involved in the interviewing process - candidates could take a school assembly or even answer questions posed directly by pupils.
The school's current head, Lorraine Kingsman, is leaving in July after 10 years in charge. "I've always emphasised children's involvement," she said.
"The children are the ones who will be most affected. They want somebody that they feel they can relate to."
