Participation: And why do you want this job?

5 mins read
Involving children in the selection process for a new head teacher can benefit both the school and its pupils. Ruth Smith speaks to those on both sides of the interview table.

"What can you say that would persuade us to choose you as our next head teacher?" Clare, aged 11, has practised her question over and over again, but this time it's for real. Along with three fellow school council members she is interviewing prospective candidates for the job of new head teacher at Horspath Church of England Primary School, just outside Oxford.

The children listen attentively to the answer before George, also 11, asks the candidate what she likes about being a teacher. Ten-year-old Eleanor then asks her to explain what she is most proud of at her current school before Nathan, 10, finishes by asking the interviewee if she has any questions. Smiles break out as the candidate leaves the school library.
