What did they do? Porth County Community School devised an extracurricular programme called E3+ to encourage young people to take part in more physical activity. It provides young people with a choice of 52 free activities a week, including aqua aerobics, canoeing and quad biking.

What's so special about it? Last week, the Sports Council for Wales launched a campaign to get more schools to offer sports activities in the evenings and at the weekend. E3+ was highlighted as an example of best practice.

How do children access it? Pupils are provided with free bus transport so they can take part in activities after school. On Tuesdays and Thursdays activities are delivered at a local leisure centre where pupils receive free entry.

What benefits has it had? The programme has led to a reduction in antisocial behaviour and a reduction in referrals to social services, because E3+ staff and youth workers engage with "at-risk" families. Academic performance at Key Stages 4 and 5 has also improved.
