37.4% of pupils with statements in mainstream schools in January 2004 (74.6 per cent in Wales)
16.7% of classes where more than half the curriculum is taught in Welsh in January 2003 (20.4 per cent in Wales)
Mike Keating, divisional director of school support and improvement at Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council, said socio-economic conditions presented many challenges for the area's schools.
"We are pleased that our standards across all key stages have risen at a greater rate than for Wales as a whole since the creation of the authority."
