31.4% of pupils with statements in mainstream classes in January 2004 (52.6 per cent in Wales)

2.4 per 1,000 secondary school pupils permanently excluded from school in 2002/03 (1.7 per 1,000 in Wales)

21% of pupils entitled to free school meals in January 2004 (17.6 per cent in Wales)

9.5% of classes where more than half the curriculum was taught in Welsh in January 2003 (20.4 per cent in Wales)

In Cardiff there is a close correlation between school performance and the socio-economic nature of the local area. In broad terms, the gap in performance between schools with different proportions of pupils entitled to free school meals widens as pupils get older. In 2003 there was also a variation between schools' performances at each key stage.
