Voluntary sector involvement in extended schools varies. Some councilshave voluntary sector groups well integrated into the strategic planningprocess - others less so. More than half of childcare schemes forschool-age children already operate on school premises, and many are runby voluntary groups. Partnerships between schools and childmindingnetworks, nurseries and community-based clubs are developing all thetime. Linking provision in this way benefits parents and children. Italso helps ensure providers maximise support and provide high-qualitycare.
The Department for Education and Skills is working with the NationalRemodelling Team, 4Children, ContinYou and other childcare organisationsto support schools to extend and offer childcare by 2010. Central to theGovernment's childcare strategy, extended schools are an importantopportunity for voluntary and private sector providers to not onlysustain but extend and run new services in their area.
