NCB Now: Comment - Extended schools and the voluntary sector mustunite

1 min read
As extended schools become more common across the country, more services will be available to parents and children.

The core offer will be access to childcare places from eight in themorning until six at night, along with study support sessions. Inaddition, many schools will be developing access to play facilities, health services, parental advice and support and a host of otherservices.

But who will actually deliver the new services? Schools do not have agreat track record in delivering many of them - and, indeed, many arealready on offer in the community through voluntary sector or privateproviders.

In theory, schools and local authorities should be checking what isavailable and working more closely with existing providers. So theschool's new role may be partly to offer a signpost to existingproviders, or help them run their services on the school site. Thiscould assist in co-ordinating existing provision, as well as increasingthe range on offer.
