Volunteers seldom get much more than appreciation for the work they do. But sometimes not even that is forthcoming.

A volunteer classroom assistant explains why she was tempted to stop giving her time.

In an age when people are encouraged to do voluntary work, I wonder if managers receive any training in how to treat people who volunteer.

I have worked as a volunteer in a variety of settings for over 20 years, but one experience made me question whether we should be unionised or at least have some recourse when treated badly.

Last year, I offered my services to a local junior school as I have 20 years' teaching experience. Most of the staff were kind and appreciative. However, the headteacher's behaviour was most odd.
