There is little surprise that Kingston-upon-Hull has a higher proportion of young asthma sufferers. The city has a strong industrial legacy with many people still employed in heavy engineering and manufacturing. Although the local authority has declared itself an Air Quality Management Area, Hull still maintains a high level of heavy industry, which inevitably impacts on the immediate environment. The city is also home to a higher number of heavy smokers, compared with the national average, and this also may be a contributory factor in triggering asthma attacks among young people.
