There is some scientific evidence that sea air is beneficial to asthma sufferers and the fact that Southampton has half the national average rate of hospital admissions for asthma might support this theory. The city now has a core of service sector employment, having shed much of its heavy industrial legacy, so air pollution is not the issue it might have been.

A significant proportion of residents belong to the market research lifestyle group Urban Intelligence. They are well educated, cosmopolitan and liberal. They enjoy healthy pursuits and take frequent exercise. They are not heavy smokers.
