The population of Sunderland includes a range of lifestyle groups.

However, there is a common existence of the lifestyle types that have a high incidence of mental health problems, including schizophrenia. For example, there are some concentrated areas with high deprivation rates, which are linked to teenage pregnancies and binge drinking. Many people have poor diet and do insufficient exercise as well as being heavy smokers.

A large percentage also gained low key-stage results from school. All of these are factors in higher than average rates of mental health admissions.
