- Newcastle-upon-Tyne has a diverse population but the most dominant lifestyle group lives in very large housing estates on the outskirts of the city. These young families with children are likely to achieve low levels of education and have poor health due to a poor diet and heavy smoking. These factors contribute to the high levels of teenage pregnancies.

Hospital admissions are well above the national average, and alcohol and drug abuse are serious concerns. In contrast, Newcastle also has a large student population who are well educated in comparison to these lifestyle types.
