Its many bars, pubs, restaurants and nightclubs make the city a destination hub for nights out. A socio-demographic analysis of Newcastle reveals a wide social divide between a large affluent middle-class student population and neighbourhoods of low-income families, many with unemployed young people. Many assaults on young people involve muggings. It is probable that the highly visible social divide creates additional flashpoints, fuelled by strong materialistic aspirations, excessive alcohol and drug dependency.
