Its many bars, pubs, restaurants and nightclubs make the city a destination hub for nights out. A sociodemographic analysis of Sunderland reveals a wide social divide between a large, affluent middle-class student population and neighbourhoods of low-income families, many with unemployed and welfare-dependent young people. It is possible that the highly visible social divides create additional flashpoints, fuelled by strong materialistic aspirations among young people, excessive alcohol use and drug dependency.
