1 min read
Councils in two-tier authority areas are furthest behind in developing play strategies, according to the results of a detailed audit of local authority play strategies across England.

The audit was commissioned by the Children's Play Council as part ofdevelopment work for the Big Lottery Fund's new 155m programmefor children's play.

The report, which has yet to be published, reveals significant regionalvariations in progress on play strategies.

Nearly 60 per cent of authorities in the North East have play strategiesin place while the picture is reversed in the East Midlands with nearly60 per cent of councils with no strategy.

However, consultant Paul Greatorex, of Leisure and the Environment, saidthe overall picture was "heartening" with evidence that localauthorities were taking play seriously. Some of the most strikingfindings were around the type of councils that have play strategies inplace or in development, he added.
