Play: Morris concedes change in pledge

1 min read
Lottery minister Estelle Morris has acknowledged that the Government's offer for play is "different from what was pledged originally".

In an adjournment debate last week she admitted there was a need to rebuild trust damaged by the delay in responding to MP Frank Dobson's review of children's play. She promised 200m would still be spent on play "by taking a slightly different route".

Her comments were welcomed by SkillsActive, the sector skills council for recreation and playwork, and the Children's Play Council. But there is still concern over the future of play projects across the country.

Perry Else, service manager of Activity Sheffield, the council department responsible for play, said the authority had anticipated a 2m share of the Lottery money. But he now fears the way the cash would be distributed could mean deserving play initiatives in different parts of the country will be competing for cash.
