Play: Campaigners seek 200m reassurance

Play campaigners will seek reassurance that 200m in lottery cash earmarked for play will boost free outdoor play facilities when they meet with the Government and lottery distributors.

In its response to MP Frank Dobson's review of children's play, the Government said 200m promised for play would not be ringfenced and would come from across the lottery distributors (Children Now, 26 January-2 February).

But Adrian Voce, director of the Children's Play Council, said it would make more sense if the cash came from a single grants programme run by one distributor. He said it was vital local authorities applying for funding were given a clear steer on the projects that will get the cash.

"We would be very unhappy to see this money going to support the extension of universal childcare," he added.
