Play: Dobson in call for ringfenced 200m

1 min read
The Government should not break its promise to set aside 200m in lottery cash for play, says MP Frank Dobson, who led the review to establish how the money should be spent.

The Department for Culture Media and Sport (DCMS) has said the cash will no longer be ringfenced due to a reorganisation of lottery funds. It has sparked anger among campaigners, who say play projects will lose out.

Dobson told Children Now: "They have abolished the New Opportunities Fund and set up this Big Lottery Fund but I don't think some internal reorganisation can be used as an excuse to get out of a simple, clear, election promise that an extra 200m will be found for play.

"I was asked to do the review on the understanding this promise would be kept and I remain working on that assumption."
