CHILDREN'S PLAY: Review body recommends play champions for local authorities

1 min read
"Play champions" who lead the way on the planning, maintenance and operation of high-quality play facilities could become a feature of local authorities, if recommendations set out in this week's Children's Play Review are adopted.

The long-awaited review, led by Frank Dobson MP, outlines a series of recommendations for the Government around the allocation of 200m of New Opportunities Fund money earmarked for children's play.

As revealed by Children Now (News, 7 January) the report says funding should be focused on the most disadvantaged areas, on the basis that these have a dearth of access to good quality play. Provisional allocation should be made to each local authority area based on child poverty levels, recommends the report, which calls for a strong emphasis on the inclusion of disabled and older children.

The report calls on local authorities to improve planning and operation of play facilities by appointing a play champion to carry forward the play agenda and ensure any projects funded by Lottery money are successful in the long term.
