Play: Children's Play Council awarded 15m for regional infrastructure

The Children's Play Council has been awarded 15m over five years to develop a regional infrastructure to support children's play, including the creation of nine regional offices.

The initiative, entitled The Play England Project, will include lookinginto establishing a national agency for children's play like those inScotland and Wales.

The funding has come from the Big Lottery Fund as part of its newprogramme for children's play. Last September the council was awardednearly 170,000 to develop plans for the regional infrastructure.Today (Wednesday) it was announced that its bid had been successful.

The project will have several strands, said play council director AdrianVoce, who described the project as "very exciting".

Firstly, it will support local authority areas in England applying tothe lottery programme, which will get under way in April. This willinclude helping them develop play strategies and play provision linkedto the programme.
