Play: Boost toy library spend, says report

A report by campaign groups Capacity and Play Matters has called for extra spending on toy libraries.

Toy Libraries: their benefits for children, families and communitiessays toy borrowing services are an enormous success, and helphard-to-reach families, but suffer from a lack of funding and councilinterest.

The report says just six out of 10 councils intend to provide toylibraries through children's centres or other arrangements. There arejust 1,000 toy libraries in England, serving 250,000 children.

As well as extra money, the report, due to be formally launched inParliament this week, calls for toy libraries to be an integral part ofall children's centres, an awareness-raising campaign among parents andan investigation into the scale of demand and use.

The last major funding boost for toy libraries was six years ago whenthe Government gave 6m to schemes in the most deprived areas.
