Objectives When Sure Start Trevu in Cornwall asked local families whatkind of services they wanted, one thing children and parents asked forwas toys. The programme was based in Cambourne, a town with its fairshare of deprivation and surrounded by relatively isolated rural areaswith poor transport links. It was felt a toy library - where parentscould loan out good quality toys cheaply and often - would workwell.
What was done The Trevu Toy Library and Resource Centre was establishedin 2001 and has gone from strength to strength. It now loans up to 900books and 2,500 toys for children aged up to seven, and in the last yearor so has developed a special focus on encouraging learning throughplay. This includes providing topic bags with books and games on atheme, and talking to parents about age-appropriate toys and how to makethe most of them.
